This photo cannot do justice to this incredible painting but hopefully it will inspire you to travel to Bucks County to see it.
This oil painting by Edward Redfield is a magnificent example of his work. It portrays a stream running through a forest in the winter with a range of low mountains in the background. This piece compares favorably with our favorite Redfield that is in the Telfair Museum in Savannah that portrays River Road at Centre Bridge. Both pieces seem very much alive with their heavy impasto brushwork and bold strokes that imply movement and flux. The effect is real that you can almost hear the creek in this piece.

This painting was the keystone piece that introduced us to the Lenfest Exhibition when we visited the Michener in 2007.

This Pennsylvania Impressionist painting seems to portray a landscape that we are very familiar with. In northern Bucks County along River Road there is a section of rock called the Pennsylvania Palisades that this painting seems to portray. The scene is located about where the Indian Rock Inn is located. A friend of mine works there and we have seen this scene many times.

Fonthill Museum is part of the Mercer Museum in Doylestown. This unique building is one of the most photographed and famous structures in Bucks County and the surrounding area. If you are coming to the area, be sure to put Fonthill on your travel itinerary.

Fonthill is located on a large 60 acre estate in the heart of Doylestown Pennsylvania. It was originally built as the private home of Henry C. Mercer in 1912. This sprawling spiraling castle has an amorphous almost haphazard feeling to it that makes for an exceptionally strange structure and a masterpiece of American architecture.

The castle has 44 rooms, 18 fireplaces, 32 staircases, 21 chimneys, 200 windows and thousands of decorative ceramic tiles that cover the floors, walls and ceilings of this amazing and eccentric structure.

Fonthill was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985. It is operated by the Bucks County Historical Society and a staff of 40 dedicated volunteers. These volunteers guide over 30,000 people through the castle annually.
