Joe Renzetti to attend screening of The Buddy Holly Story

During the ’60′s, in Philadelphia, Cameo records with the help of Dick Clark and American Bandstand, was experiencing a string of national hit records. Philly had become the Mecca for a new dance craze, sparked by “The Twist” by Chubby Checker. Joe Renzetti became Cameo records house guitarist, and played on the hits: Let’s twist Again, The Mashed Potatoes, South Street, The Bristol Stomp, The Limbo Rock, Palisades Park, Tallahassee Lassie.

Being a film buff, an always harboring an interest in film music, Renzetti decided to test his luck in Hollywood. The move paid off; he was called to do the music for “The Buddy Holly Story.” Although the music was that of Holly’s, he taught the actors to play the instruments and sing the songs from scratch. Filmed, live on camera and using 24 track recording, the actors actually played and sung as a performing group. This had never been done on film. For this successful accomplishment, Renzetti won the Oscar for the “Best Adaptation Score” that year. (1979) Joe Renzetti is currently writing works for Orchestra, chamber groups, and individual artists.

Joe will be available for questions and answers after the screening Saturday evening.

The Buddy Holly Story
October 9th, 7pm

A powerful biography of ’50s Texas rockabilly phenomenon Buddy Holly who took his band the Crickets to the top of the charts before a tragic airplane accident ended his life. The film portrays Holly as regular, hardworking type who struggles with peers and the music industry before he makes it big with the huge hit “That’ll Be The Day.” The film details the final events leading up to the plane crash, en route to Minnesota in a snow storm on February 3, 1959, which also claimed the lives of Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. The Buddy Holly Story received an Academy Award for Music Scoring (Best Adaptation Score; Joe Renzetti) . The Buddy Holly Story also received Academy Awards nominations for Actor (Gary Busey) and Sound (Tex Rudloff, Joel Fein, Curly Thirlwell, Willie Burton).
