Stockton New Jersey is a charming little village in Western New Jersey on the Delaware River, minutes away from Bucks County and a few miles north of the trendy towns of New Hope and Lambertville.

Stockton NJ is one of the oldest communities in the entire region. In 1703, John Reading, an early founder of Hunterdon County, purchased a large tract of land that included what has become the Stockton NJ that we know today. In the 1790′s, John Prall purchased land here and built several mills, a store and several stone houses. This mill, Prallsville Mill still stands today and is the sight of many special events, exhibitions and weddings.

Stockton today is home to the Stockton Inn that has recently been renovated, Hendrick’s Appliances, several restaurants, a wine shop and other businesses.

Stockton has a population of 560, and is 0.5 square miles in size.

The Stockton Inn

The Stockton Inn has been has been welcoming guests for 300 years. Today the Inn offers lodging, dining, live entertainment and a tavern. The former name of the establishment was Colligan’s Stockton Inn, named after “Colligan’s Farm”. It is located at the Intersection of Route 29 from Trenton to Frenchtown, and Bridge Street that crosses the Delaware River to Centre Bridge, New Hope, Peddler’s Village and Lahaska.

Prallsville Mills

The Prallsville Mills have a history that dates back over 280 years. In about 1720, Daniel Howell built a grist mill on this site at the Wickeckeoke Creek and the Delaware River. In 1794 the property was sold to John Prall who added more mills to the site, stone houses and other buildings that contributed to the community becoming a commercial and trading center. In 1874, the grist mill burned down, but was rebuilt a few years later. This is the building that exists today on this beautiful site along the Delaware River and New Jersey’s River Road, Route 29. Prallsville Mills is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The entire property became part of the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park in 1974.

When John Philip Kase built a home here in 1738, the Lenape Indians were already here hunting, fishing, traveling and trading. This tradition continues today with Flemington being at the crossroads between major regional highways and a regional hub for shopping, dining, business and government. A town of contrasts, Flemington is best known for it’s outlet shopping center, Liberty Village and for the large corporate stores along Route 202, but it has another side that many travelers never see, which is the historic district along Main Street where a large percentage of the buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Flemington is the county seat of Hunterdon County, has a population of 4,200, and is 1.1 square miles in size.

Milford New Jersey is a tiny charming town in rural Hunterdon County on the Delaware River, just across the river from Upper Black Eddy and Bucks County Pennsylvania. Milford began to be settled about 1750 when a grist mill was built here. When that mill burned in 1769, the community came to be known as Burnt Mills. For some time after that, the town was known as Lowreytown, named after Thomas Lowrey, who was also an important figure in the founding of Flemington and Frenchtown. Milford today is home to the Ship Inn and The Oyster House, along with a small group of shops that sell antiques, groceries, hardware, flowers, pet supplies and more. Chestnut Hill on the Delaware Bed and Breakfast is the village’s only lodging. Milford has a population of 1,195, and is 1.2 square miles in size.
