Mellow Mushroom Pizza

Passing by this place the first time, you almost feel like you’ve been sucked into in a time travel machine that takes you back to 1969 or 1977.
The Mellow Mushroom is located on tree lined Liberty Street in our favorite area of the historical district of downtown Savannah.

The psychedelic, funky feel of the place comes from the origins of the first Mellow Mushroom pizza parlor back in the early 70′s in midtown Atlanta. The business was opened by two college students, who were joined by a third college student, who opened the second location near the University of Georgia. Since then, the restaurant has expanded all over the South, but it still remains true to it’s roots.

The Mellow Mushroom offers a different type of pizza than most of their competitors. Their pizza dough is made with a vitamin enriched, high gluten flour with wheat germ and natural spring water. They use reduced fat mozzarella cheese, precook all of their meats for the pizzas and use no refined white sugar in their sauces. They strive to deliver the best tasting and healthy pizzas that can be made. For vegetarians they offer a wide selection of pizzas, hoagies, salads and calzones.

The pizza menu here is extensive. Some of their specialty gourmet pizzas include: The Mighty Meaty (with 5 meat toppings), a chicken Cordon-Bleu pizza (chicken, ham, mozzarella, onions, roasted peppers, olive oil + garlic base), a Kosmic Karma ( spinach, feta, sun dried tomatoes, fresh tomatoes, swirls of pesto), Magical Mystery Tour (spinach, mozzarella, portabella mushrooms, button mushrooms, feta, jalapenos on a pesto base) and a gourmet white pizza (sun dried tomatoes, fresh tomatoes, provolone, mozzarella, feta, onions, garlic, olive oil sauce). In addition to this, The Mellow offers an array of toppings not found in most pizzerias. Some of the those include: broccoli, banana peppers, artichoke hearts, fresh basil, bbq chicken, jerk chicken, pepperoncini, portabella, tofu, green olives, black olives, feta cheese and more.

Their hoagies include: steak and cheese, a heated vegetarian hoagie (provolone, mozzarella, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, black olives, lettuce, tomato, sprouts, mayonnaise), tofu hoagie (grilled tofu, teriyaki, provolone, grilled onions, mushrooms, green peppers, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, sprouts), mushroom club hoagie (ham, turkey, crispy bacon, provolone cheese, mushrooms, onions, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, sprouts) and a jerk chicken hoagie (spicy jerk chicken, melted provolone, grilled pineapple, tomato, lettuce, mayonnaise).

Their other offerings include: chef, Greek and Caesar salads, cheese calzones, garlic bread, soups, hummus and seasoned homemade pretzels.

The Mellow Mushroom is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. They are open late on certain nights and they offer dine-in and take-out.
