Nishisakawick Creek . Frenchtown NJ . Spring 2008

This photographic collage shows one of the creeks that runs through our small New Jersey town. They are both called Nishisakawick, one large and one small. On either side of the center photo of the creek is a picture of the roots of a tree along the bank of the creek.

Nishisakawick is a Native American or Indian word that translates as “two outlets of a stream near a house”, which in an odd way proves how old the settlement of Frenchtown NJ is. Our Native American brothers had a house here centuries ago when they named the creek.

In terms of the scene pictured here, you have to realize that it portrays early spring and that I did not touch up the colors to make them more intense. That is just how they looked that day.

If you like this photo, see our other shots from this hike up the creek. If you want to know more about the early Lenape history of our town and region see the website link on the right.
